Saw this beer at a bottleshop in Aarschot, and not recognizing it, decided to give it a go.
Pours a dark brown with some reddish tones. An immediately thick head dissipated quite quickly. Had limited carbonation.
Mostly malt and a little candi sugar in the smell.
First taste is sweet — the sugar plus some caramel hit you right away, but a bitter, peppery finish kind of soils the sweetness.
Mouthfeel is slightly creamy and buttery; this is perhaps the highpoint of this beer.
Overall, this is a decent brew, nothing special. If it weren't for the bitter finish, I'd rate it higher.
As a sidenote, on the bottle (in Flemish) it says the beer is made by Achilles but brewed at De Proef, following a recipe by "Willy Maes". I wonder if he's any relation to the Belgian brewer Henri Maes.
