Under the Radar from Hitchhiker. 16 fl oz can. $ 4.50 (Including tax), $ 0.281/fl oz from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA, can from reefer, picked up 29/11/24. Reviewed 03/01/25 (Review 3438). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on bottom edge of label, barely visible “10/30/202?.” Stored at 39 degrees F at home. Served at 40.1 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 51.0 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), hazy.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, ruby at the lower edge.
Head: Average (Maximum 2.2 cm, aggressive center pour), oat, high density, fed by heavy carbonation. Rapidly drops to a 0.5 – 0.8 cm crown fed by carbonation and a complete, rocky cap.
Lacing – Good. Multiple bands of tiny to near-microscopic bubbles with many stalactites and numerous small windows.
Aroma – 4 – Toasted malt and a noticeable aroma of motor oil, slightly sweet. No hops, no yeast, no ethanol (6.8 % ABV, as marked on label). No disulfide or diacetyl.
Flavor – 4 – Toasted malt. No motor oil, no hop flavor but slightly bitter, no yeast, no ethanol. No disulfides, no diacetyl. Finishes slightly sweet. Mild gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; approaching creamy; lively but soft carbonation.
Style: Basically, follows the style guidelines as condensed by BA.
Final impression and summation: 4 Malty but needs more hop flavor. Still, a decent example of a style that is rarely seen in this area.

Mahogany with a tan foam head of moderate height settling to an unevenly puffy film leaving a top to bottom curtain of coral lacing on the glass.
A nose of dusty roast introduces a slightly sharper but still more roasty, almost smoky and woody palate, while accented by brighter notes of pine resin and orange rind. It's almost like having a cigar with an old fashioned.
The medium body has a fine froth and finishes semi-dry.

Pours a dark black, good head and lace . Aroma is bready. Taste has a nice sweet bitter lingering effect. Got a 4 pack at Whole Foods. Hitchhiker is always coming out with new concoctions. I’m always getting 4 packs.

On tap at Caliente Pizza and Draft House. Nice and different for a black IPA. Leah's b-day last day of weekend. I don't get roasty like the description. Nice medium hop though.
