Notes via stream of consciousness: So what is this? It's a porter with coconut, coffee, lactose, cocoa nibs, and vanilla beans! Wow! How strong is it? It's 6.8% by volume. OK, let's see what it looks like... it's a very dark mahogany brown that looks almost black in the full pint. If you hold it to the light you can see that it's clear, and there are ruby, orange, and golden highlights at the base of the glass. The head is a creamy cap of light tan. Cocoa and creamy coffee jump out at you in the nose. There's also some milk chocolate and a little bit of vanilla but I'm not getting the coconut. I should note that the head has already fallen but I kind of expected that. Coconut and cacao nibs are both loaded with fat which kills a head right quick. On to the taste then... wow! There's a ton of caramel to it that supports everything else. The cacao nibs are there, and there's plenty of coconut and vanilla. That reminds me of an Almond Joy candy bar. The coffee is there as well, and it comes and goes but mainly appears more towards the swallow. It's a sweet beer and I'm definitely going to label this one as a dessert beer. I doubt that I'd want to drink an entire pint of this all at once ~ although I'm clearly just about to do that! Had I realized what this was I might have saved it for later on this evening but it's only 4 pm right now so I'm having my dessert before my dinner! There's not a lot of bitterness to it, as you might expect, but the coffee and dark malts add a little bit of acidity, and there is some alcohol although it's not that much, and together they work to keep it from becoming cloying, and in all honesty there's not a whole lot of body to it so it doesn't stick in the mouth anyway. I'd call it medium bodied, and that's with the lactose. One thing I failed to mention is that there's a light underlying fruitiness to it. Also, the more I drink the more I get a touch of a green pepper note fromthe coffee but this sample is 6 months old. Overall I think the coffee component is great and I'm sorry I didn't get around to tasting this sooner. I've had beers that were based on an Almond Joy candy bar before and they were great, and from what I can remember this one is just as good if not better because it's a little more like a beer than a dessert beer ~ not by much, but by a little, and on that note I have finished it and I don't think it was too sweet, certainly not cloying, and really enjoyable.

Wow what a great easy to drink coffee porter! Vanilla and cocoa nibs in perfect Harmony with just a very mild hint of coconut just enough to let you know it's there without being too oily. Not to bitter or aggressive was pleasantly surprised! Will be sure to grab one to go!

crowler
Pours dark opaque brown, slight light penetration around the edges. Tan head retains indefinitely as a film.
Smells of fresh roasted coffee beans, biscuit, brown sugar, and a hint of oak.
Tastes of brown sugar, caramel, fresh coffee bean, vanilla, biscuit and toast. Dry woody hop undertone.
Medium to thin body, tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.
Decent porter, really nice fresh coffee flavor to this one. Goes down smooth. Body feels a bitter thinner than I would expect. A tad flat maybe, could be the crowler. Really nothing major to complain about and worth trying though. This is tasty and I will probably have it again.

Pours dark with slight brown hues. Sits dark in the glass. Creamy mocha head.
Smells of fresh roasted coffee with mild vanilla tones. Do not get any coconut on the nose.
Taste follows the nose almost perfectly. The vanilla balances out the roasted coffee flavor nicely. Once again, do not get any coconut on the taste
Medium (-) mouthfeel
Overall, nice beer from Hitchhiker. Would like more coconut in the smell and taste however, the flavors that are there are very pleasant.
