Pours a deep brown/black with minimal head. Looks a little oily or slick as well. Smell is heavy on the barrel, but you also get coffee and chocolate as well. The taste is also very barrel heavy, and it is very sweet as well. The sweetness buries some of the other elements, but I get vanilla and chocolate along with the coffee. The feel is smooth - medium bodied and almost no carbonation.
This is a nice beer, but it was hard to finish. The sweetness built as the beer warmed and combined with the strong barrel, it brought on a bit of a headache.

Appearance - Pours a dark brown with a finger of bubbly head that quickly dissipates.
Smell - bready caramel malts, fig, plum, raisin, rum barrel aromas, vanilla, and chocolate. There is also a hint of earthy and leafy hops.
Taste - Bready caramel malts followed by the fig, plum, raisin, and chocolate. The vanilla and hint of earthy and leafy hops come through at the end. The rum barrel aromas are lost in translation.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Finishes with a lingering sweetness.
Overall - A brew that displays some good elements of the style. However, since this is a "barrel-aged brew", I was expecting to get more aromas from the rum barrel. Not sure if this was worth the hefty price tag but a good first attempt from the folks at Last Best at barrel aging a beer.

This was a very nice offering from Last Best. A nice roasty/chocolaty base from the porter is complimented by nice sprice, oak and spirit notes from the rum barrel. A touch sweet, which would be my main (and really only noteworthy) criticism of this beer. Well done!
