Can to mug.
The appearance was a dark orange to muddy brown sort of color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a decent pace. Mild stringy lace.
The aroma had some baking spice, light milk chocolate, dark bread/blended biscuits, coca cola, cherry juice sweetness (slightly like Maraschino, but not too much), some floral hop portions, and some candied yams at the very end.
The flavor definitely leaned towards the sweet side initially and then slowly developed the baker's spice but even that really had a hard time trying to come out. Mild coca cola to bready and cherry sweet aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Some thoughts on the possibility of cloying tones seem to be invading. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, not a bad winter warmer, possibly under carbed, but I think I could give this another shot if given the chance.

Well, well, well. Once again, Bowen Island proves that it is possible to brew a very decent beer for a very reasonable price. The smell is a bit tinny and off, but it looks decent in the glass - somewhat like a glass of cola. The expected flavors are present - cocoa, with a bit of cherry - not unlike the cherry blossom candies I used to enjoy as a youngster. Overall, definitely a pleasant surprise in my discount mixer pack.

355ml can, part of the current Bowen Island seasonal mixed pack - a self-described 'mild winter ale'.
This beer pours a clear, dark orange-cola brown colour, with three chubby fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves a bit of cannonball splash aftermath lace in places around the glass as it quickly recedes.
It smells of weak chocolate-covered raspberries, bready caramel malt, muddled Christmas baking spice, a hint of stale vanilla, and maybe a suggestion of wispy cold coffee. The taste is more raspberry and strawberry fruitiness, now divorced from the discount shelf chocolate wafers, soft, and sort of doughy caramel malt, a vanilla-tinged black licorice thing, and some very, very understated (hiding, maybe?) earthy hop bitterness.
The carbonation is adequate in its supportive and not so frivolous frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, nothing but a wee clamminess stepping in here to play the foil. It finishes on the sweet side, that mixed berry character still going strong, in front of a steady, if underwhelming malt.
Overall, I gotta say that I wasn't expecting much here, and the typical winter warmer essences (spice, vanilla, and, yeah, booze) are indeed lacking, but that red berry fruitiness combined with simple cocoa notes renders this a pleasant and somewhat engaging tipple. Just not one too indebted to the current season - no big loss.
