Appearance - Pours an amber copper with three fingers of frothy white head.
Smell - earthy, piney, citrus, leafy, and floral hops, piney hops, citrus and grapefruit peel, pine resin, bready malts, caramel, toffee, and earthy yeast.
Taste - mild earthy, piney, citrus, leafy, and floral hops upfront. The citrus and grapefruit peel, and pine resin come through next. The bready malts, caramel, toffee, and earthy yeast round out the brew.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes slightly sticky with the hops and malts lingering.
Overall - A highly drinkable American red that displays the elements well. I just wish the hops and other elements had a little more oomph to them but otherwise a respectable brew.

Single from Steamworks in Gastown Vancouver.
Deep copper to amber pour 2+ fingers of creamy beige head that fades to a dirty sea foam.
Aroma on head citrus, hoppy, pine, as head fades get the underlying caramel malt.
Taste of a grainy burnt caramel malt, citrus - grapefruit pith, earthy hops.
Thin side of medium body with tame carbonation - easy drinking with a bit of lingering earthy hop bitterness.

I am reviewing this on the eve of the 18th anniversary of 9-11-2001 although the date stamp will show 9-11-2019. This is a CANQuest (tm) moment that remains indelible in my mind. My Pops passed away on 28 July 2001 & I had recently returned to the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) for my senior year. I knew that he would have wanted me to CANplete my education & the prospect of his not being around to see me graduate CANstantly hurt. I was living in Lothrop Hall in a single-person dorm room & I liked to get up early in the morning to do homework & hit the shower before the bulk of my younger hallmates. I had my tv on, listening to KDKA-TV while banging away on my desktop keyboard to CANplete yet another paper. Suddenly, they cut live to Manhattan where the first plane had just hit & the thought was that it had been an accident. As the morning's events unfolded & the horrors mounted, I CANtemplated returning to active duty, having retired in October 1998. It would have meant disrupting my education & I know that Pops would not have been pleased, but I agonized for years as the U.S. got entrenched in Iraq & Afghanistan. This is a tough day for me.

I did not really want to play around with this one so I Crack!ed the vent & immediately CANmenced a slow, gentle C-Line Glug.
This one was going to be tough since I was a firefighter once, one of the youngest sailors ever to qualify as a shipboard Locker Leader. There is a level of insanity required to be a cop (I did that, also) or a fireman in order to run towards danger while everyone else is running away. It accounts for a LOT of my madness, but I felt for all of them that morning. F**king survivor's guilt is kicking in again.
The foam piled up quickly & tremendously. The trick in using firefighting foam is to keep the hose & nozzle-handlers from washing it off of the deck with their efforts in beating down the flames with water. No such problem here! The hose in the kitchen sink was not going to reach anyway, but it was piled high, three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with excellent retention, preventing me from my first sip. 8=( Color was a gorgeous Deep-Amber/Light-Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was the kind of American Amber/Red Ale that I really dig! Amber Ales were the initial norm for microbreweries & brewpubs in the '80s & early-to-mid '90s, but they were usually malt-forward & way too sweet for my taste. The modern iterations, like this one, are more hop-forward. It had a pronounced pine resinousness (YES!) along with the sense that Simcoe, the naughty kitty, had been doing her business & might also need to be rescued. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. It was definitely big for the style. I really liked the balanced taste - I definitely got pine resin & cattiness, but at the same time, the malt was giving it a very lightly chocolaty-caramel sweetness. This was the hard lesson learned by Sam Adams: a little caramel mal CAN go a LONG way! This was dialed in beautifully to perfectly CANpliment the hops. Finish was semi-dry, thanks to the malt presence, but do not let that throw you off. This was probably on of the best examples of the revamped style in my recent memory. Yum! YMMV.

Pours a deep, dark amber coloration with a small, creamy head. Smells of caramel malt and citrus hops, with hints of toffee and pine. Taste is dominated by caramel malt, toffee and a light coffee note, with hoppy notes of grapefruit, orange rind and pine as well. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some pine lingering in the aftertaste. Thin mouthfeel with a light body and medium carbonation.
Decent Red Ale with a good flavour profile that is mainly let down by a somewhat thin and watery mouthfeel and body.
