Canned B/12/22 (February?)

Appearance - Pours dark chestnut brown with a tan, near two-finger width head. Good retention before finally dying down to a thin, broken layer of suds with a thick ring hugging the edge of the glass. Good lacing, with some broken sheeting, lines and some small spotting.

Smell - Hint of roast, some powered cocoa and hoppy notes of grass, pine and a hint of citrus.

Taste - Follows the nose. A fairly equal amount of malt to hop to start, with toffee and lesser powdered cocoa and a kiss of roast, while the hops deliver plenty of grass flavor, with lesser pine and a touch of citrus pith as it approaches the finish. Aftertaste lingers with a hint of cocoa and continuing pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Slick drinker before a semi-dry finish.

Overall - A good, solid black IPA though it's not one I'd miss if I never had it again.

16oz can (no date, but the code L 040. Hope that helps) poured into 14oz teku. Poured a nearly solid black color with almost 2 inches of light tan head that very good retention and very light lacing.

The aroma had the expected roast notes, but in far less quantity than usually found in the style, letting the grains shine more. The hops were apparent, but somewhat subdued. the Nelson Sauvin hops didn't pop in their usual way.

Similar on the tongue, all the expected aspects, just softer than is generally found.

The body was smooth and even, with an easy drinking quality I rarely get from the style. The finish was medium, leaning towards dry.

Drinkability was good, I might have a second, which almost never happens with CDAs for me.

Overall, a nice brew, certainly worth a shot if you see it.

Imagine a WC IPA but we additional malts. That's this beer. It pours dark brown and creates creamy head. Low carbonation and thin mouth feel. I would say this is similar to Black Bute Porter by Deschutes. Although, I like this one better. Good stuff.

Very dark orange-black color. The head is a light tan with a mix of bubble sizes. The head slowly collapsed into larger bubbles, leaving a bit of lacing on the side. Too dark to see any bubbles rising.

Strong vegetable hop smell with a little bit of yeast. Swirling the glass kicked up a bit of barnyard and a very light sweet malt.

The flavor started much like a typical IPA, with bitter hops dominating. A faint sweet malt picked up in the flavor. The barnyard slowly faded in. The aftertaste grew more bitter over time with the hop flavor again dominating.

Strong carbonation caused some tongue tingling as most of the fluid turned into foam. Medium-heavy body right from the start.

This started as a typical IPA and then increased the malt to a level where it is still adding to the flavor instead of overwhelming. The barnyard is on the edge of being too much.

Serving: On tap at Steamworks Brewing Co. (Vancouver brewpub), served in a 18 oz Manchester pint glass.

Appearance: Deep, inky dark brown with a nice frothy head of off white foam and bubbles. Streaks of lace and a frothy cap of foam persist.

Smell: Roasted malt aroma with notes of pine and citrus.

Taste: Lemony citrus leads but gives way to mellower melon and tropical fruit notes as well as some pine needles. Roasted malt is there with coffee and burnt toast notes, but stays out of the way the hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, slightly oily feel and slightly softer carbonation.

Overall: A nice pint for a dreary autumn West Coast day - good dose of hops along with dark, roasty malt.
