Steamworks Winter White Stout takes the rich typical stout flavours and body imparted from oats and barley, but without the dark coloured, roasted malts traditionally used in a stout. Instead, these roasted notes come from first aging the beer with whole espresso beans from East Vancouver’s Pallet Coffee, and then with whole cacao beans from East Van Roasters. The result is a deliciously unexpected brew that pours light gold with a thick white head, perfect for the West Coast Winter.

Slightly hazy golden color with off-white head. Aroma has toasted coffee, even green coffee beans. Taste follows with the green coffee notes and a light bitterness on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Overall it's an interesting beer but not something really special.

650ml bottle, the latest seasonal from this Gastown brewery to make it to Alberta. Sexy outdoorsy chick depicted on the black and white screened label.
This beer pours a hazy, medium golden yellow colour, with one rather skinny finger of weakly foamy, and mostly just wispy dirty white head, which leaves a few instances of bobbing flotsam lace around the glass as things slowly subside.
It smells of bitter artisanal coffee, dry cocoa powder, roasted pale and caramel malt, faint black licorice, stale vanilla beans, a bit of free-agent (I'm gonna say white) ash, and soft earthy and leafy hop bitters. The taste is more acerbic coffee grounds, bittersweet chocolate, a lesser grainy caramel malt sweetness, vegetal vanilla, mildly snaking wet smoke, and more or less the same plain earthy, musty, and leafy hops from the nose.
The carbonation is quite understated in its barely palpable frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and sort of smooth, a certain pithiness arising shortly after take-off, which mars any suggestion of straight-up, oat-enabled creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the coffee backing off a fair bit, while the guest 'flakes' start drumming up attention for their cereal-like graininess.
Yah, this is indeed a strange one - I think I've only ever once before come across this major tweaking of the style, and that was an offering from the Durham Brewery in England. At any rate, Steamworks does it right, shoring things up on the stout side with some cocoa and coffee (which apparently don't add colour), and succeeds in screwing with my mind/palate neural connections every time I glance at my glass. Whatever, it basically works, in a sort of flavoured albino stout manner.

LOOK: A mind blowing golden caramel haze fills the glass, lining the top of the beer with a thin white head. Spotty lacing sticks to the side of the glass while carbonation can be seen raising from the center of the glass. Sediment floats in the beer like a winter wonderland snow globe.
SMELL: The smell is strong right off the start! Sitting back in my chair and beer on the table, bitter coffee and cocoa can be enjoyed through the nose. The coffee is light like a triple, triple which adds to the sweet undertones. Vanilla and caramel are evident and the finish is a bit dry.
TASTE / MOUTHFEEL: The taste focuses on bitter coffee and cocoa. A drying chardonnay white wine can be tasted. Notes of citrus and wheat are noted. A light to moderate mouthfeel and carbonation.
OVERALL: Just all around a cool hybrid beer that you need to see to believe; a true winter wonderland fantasy. A heavy focus on coffee, and a tasty coffee ale / stout at that. A great treat and experience during your winter. I loved the creativity of steamworks nd have no major complaints. If you can find it, go and explore this winter white stout.

Pours a golden colour with a thin white head that quickly dissipates leaving a ring of head around the glass. There is a bit of sediment floating in the glass. Smells like a stout with roasted malt, coffee and slight vanilla notes. The taste leads with some coffee, tobacco smoke, roasted malt and finishes with some hoppy bitterness. The mouthfeel is in the medium range with a mid-range carbonation. An okay beer, wasn't to sure expect. I find the tobacco taste lingers a bit too long though

Wow! What a unique concept. It looks like a lager, smells like a coffee, and tastes like a coffee stout...so cool. I norally shy away from stouts and porters, unless it's winter and I'm by the fire, but this is so delicious. Nice work Steamworks!
