Steamworks Barrel Aged Series 2017
This robust Rye Barley Wine was carefully aged for months in Woodford Reserve rye barrels resulting in a vibrant red brew we fittingly named: Scarlet. With rich flavours and a warming finish , it's perfect for a rainy day or worthy of a space in the cellar.
2017 vintage: 9.5% ABV
2019 vintage: 11% ABV

650 ml 2021 Vintage 11.2% ABV.
Pours a clear (okay split two ways - second half got dregs, so a bit less than clear) ruby dark amber with half finger short lived tawny fine bubbles.
Aroma is malty - caramel, toffee, boozy fruit cake, notes of spicy rye, slightly floral and fruity hops.
Sweet and boozy on the palate - brown sugar, toffee, raisin, hint of the rye barrel spiciness though the sweetness dominates.
Full boozy, sweet and warming mouthfeel - very nice winter sipper.

2020 vintage 11%.
Appearance - Pours a rusty red with two fingers of frothy white head.
Smell - earthy, leafy, and floral hops, oak, bourbon barrel, caramel, raisin, bready malts, and earthy yeast.
Taste - earthy, leafy, and floral hops upfront. The oak and bourbon barrel are lost in translation. Not sure what happened as the aroma was promising. The caramel, raisin, bready malts, and earthy yeast round out the brew.
Mouthfeel - Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes sweet with the hint of barrel and bourbon lingering.
Overall - A brew that started off with a real promise but missed the mark in the taste. The bourbon barrel was lost in translation. Alas, its a tad disappointing but I will enjoy what I have left.

Clear red-brown color. Almost no head, just a few medium sized bubbles. No lacing. Very few bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Very nice color, but presents itself as a nearly flat soft drink instead of an ale.
Very unusual vegetable/fruit scent. The dominant note is of scorched pomegranate juice with a bit of celery. Swirling the glass kicked up much nicer fresh fruit (which I could not identify), some rye malt, and an unusual yeasty scent. Not very beer-like, but very inviting.
Very soft malt flavor, favoring the rye. This is joined by sweet caramel and toffee. It all mellows down to a bourbon without the burn. The barrel supplies a wood flavor that harmonizes with the rye flavor. Despite claiming an 11% ABV, I could not detect an alcohol flavor.
There is just enough carbonation to turn this into a soft, creamy foam. Heavy body.
The 2019 Vintage is not like other barley wines I have had. The strong rye flavor blends so well with the wood from the barrel. The low carbonation makes me think that this might work by itself as a hot mulled ale.
My notes for the previous vintage mentioned that it also had some sour notes, like a lambic that got lost on its way.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dirty brown color ale with a medium light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of vanilla with some caramelized malt notes, light toffee with some huge bourbon notes. Taste is an enjoyable mix of vanilla, some huge bourbon notes and light sweet toffee notes with caramelized malt with light candy flavours. Body is full with good carbonation with no real apparent alcohol flavours. Complex barleywine with an interesting twist for the style.

Steamworks Brewpub 'Scarlet Red Rye Ale' @ 9.5% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $11
A-pour is brown from the bottle to a mahogany in the glass with a small dissapating tan head leaving a minimal lace ring along the snifter
S-rye barley wine
T-bit rough start , not so smooth
