Cloudy dark golden-straw. A steady stream of fine bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Poured a thick head which reduced to a thick skiff across the top after a minute. Left no lacing on the side of the glass.
Has a light sour funk scent with a hint of yeast. Swirling the glass kicked up a bit more funk and a hint of cow urine.
Taste is very tart fruit with some interesting funk. There is a reminder of the smell of an old wooden medicine cabinet, with some leaky medicine caps - perhaps mercurochrome or iodine in rubbing alcohol. This is much more pleasant than it sounds, partially because it is mostly the aromatic wood (very old red cedar?) coming through and partially since it is such a light flavor compared to the rest. Gooseberry is the only one of the three berries I could identify. The gooseberry is contributing to the tart flavor plus some astringency. The aftertaste is mostly tart funk with a touch of bitter.
The small bubbles tickle the tongue for a long time. It takes a while for it to foam up, but the foam is very light. There is some astringency afterwards, but it doesn't seem out of place after the flood of flavors has passed.
This came in a 750 ml bottle with a cork and wire cage. I was planning to share, but seriously reconsidered after the first taste. This is the closest to a proper Belgian Lambic I have found brewed this side of the pond.
