Brewed in the grand tradition of Belgian Kriek, this wild ale is an exercise in patience. 3000 lbs of Okanagan Bing and Rainier cherries were blended with a selection of 1-2 year old ales from neutral oak barrels. After several month, the beer was transferred into bottle to begin its slow conditioning and natural carbonation.

Cloudy pale-ruby color. Poured a short head of noisy, medium sized bubbles that disappeared in a few seconds. Initial bubbles on the side of the glass were replaced with a medium flow of small bubbles from the bottom. Left no lacing.

Smells of cherry, sour funk, and some bark which is similar to but not quite the same as cinnamon. A bit of hot spice that lightly burns the nostrils. The sour funk smell really seems to be made up of a few blended funk(s); it seems somewhat different from other sour ales. Swirling the glass really brings out more of the sour funk and a very light horseblanket.

Mild sour funk flavor with a lighter touch of the cherries than expected from the smell. The cherries are two local varieties which are much sweeter than the classic Belgian variety, making it taste just a bit like cherry cough drops. The barrel flavor comes through as a light cinnamon-like bark. As it warms up, the funk flavor expands and seems to push the cherry along with it. There is a slight burn, as if from cinnamon spice rather than alcohol. A hint of tannin rounds off the flavor profile. The aftertaste is a quick burst of sour followed by a stronger sour flavor. A mild cherry comes along for the ride. After a while it turns a bit harsh, as some tannin shows up. There is a bit of a rebound from the sour funk to a mild sweet flavor. I don't know if this is my taste buds desensitizing from the sour so that neutral tastes sweet.

Moderate tongue tingling. Nothing much in the way of foam. Close to a diet soft drink (no sugar syrup feel). Somewhat astringent after it warms up a bit, especially during the aftertaste.

I just had a highly rated Belgian Kriek that had an overwhelming cinnamon-like bark flavor that serious diminished the overall effect. This is much more restrained and enhances the flavor, something I was worried about when I first smelled it. The biggest detractor is the cherries - I'm used to the Belgian variety, so the table cherries wind up tasting a little fake, like a few cough drops were tossed in with the 3000 lbs of cherries. Sometimes using local supplies causes problems that require workarounds. This is still an amazing beer that easily competes with the top of the Belgian Krieks.
