Unknown vintage; drank 11/1/21 @ the Yarchives.

Brown/black appearance.

A violent pour yielded a big tan head; a thick curtain of tree-rung lace.

Brown sugar, cocoa powder & autumn leaf notes in the nose.

Creamy medium mouthfeel.

Brown sugar, cocoa powder & autumn leaf flavors; robust but a bit too sweet. Good.

Pours chestnut-colored with tawny highlights, topped by a modest cap of coarse, khaki foam that soon sputters away. Mild aroma smells of roasted malt complemented by notes of chocolate and toffee.

The taste features a hefty dose of caramel and roasted sugar up front, succeeded by a meager helping of slightly earthy, noble hops. Warming reveals notes of milk chocolate, roasted malt, prunes, and a livelier, awkward bitterness that lacks an identifiable character. Medium-light body and modest carbonation make for drinkable—albeit somewhat limp—mouthfeel.

Overall, this is a bog standard porter whose unwieldy sweetness becomes cloying in short order. Not an encouraging first foray into the realm of Pollyanna...

12oz bottle, no apparent freshness date. A tall foamy tan head caps a dark brown ale. Bold aroma of chocolate, grain, and earthy hops permeates the nose. Nice balanced flavors of cocoa, chocolate malt, nutty grain, coffee, caramel, toffee, and earthy & herbal hops. Fuller body, ample carbonation, balanced finish. This is a winner - I don't know why it took me so long to get around to this one!

16oz draft pour into a mug boasts an opaque mahogany brown body and floats a persistent 1/4in tan tight-bubbled head. A mix of spotted and spidery lacing.
Aromas include cocoa powder, roastiness, and coffee.
Flavors are a bit more complex adding some dried fruit, and caramel.
Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with an oily finish.
Overall a very good version of the style.

I got a bottle of this off the Binny's single shelf. It poured an opaque dark with no head and no lace. The scent had hints of chocolate and roast. The taste was nicely balanced for a porter with peat and roast presence. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a solid beer.

Look: Nearly black all the way through except the dark brown edges. A finger of creamy, tan head.

Smell: Very pleasant. Roasted malts and milk chocolate.

Taste: The flavors follow the nose. The roasted malts and sweet chocolate dominate the flavor, however there are some really subtle dark fruit notes as well.

Feel: Slightly creamy, yet refreshing. Very little carbonation.

Overall: Delicious and easy to drink. This brew doesn't do anything that stands out as unique, but if you are looking for a solid porter that fits perfectly in to it's category, then look no further.

I bought this beer from Pollyanna to start my long-term protest against the un-democratic rig of the Electoral College. I now only by beers from blue states. (Sorry to punish mostly Michigan and Wisconsin, but American life sometimes can be unfair and the Electoral College contributes unnecessarily to our unfairness.) Two stains hurtful to democracy (heightened cynicism and brazen marketing) won the 1988 election. In the November 8 just past, we witnessed what happens when those paths collide. Unfortunately for all, the most productive thing I can do today is drink beer. So, I am.

But this is a site about beer, so I get to the point as best I can in this altered state of affairs.

Eleanor is a good porter from a young brewery. (Being an urbanist, I focus on Chicago breweries. But Pollyanna is in a suburb of only 16,000 that sprawls into 3 counties; so that alone makes it unique...in not necessarily a positive way.)

Again to the point... Pollyanna understands the style is about toasting malts that like to be toasted. Pollyanna does this well. It shows in Eleanor's aroma and taste. Their craftmanship is proven in the dry finish.

If you find Eleanor, buy it. This is a thoughtful brewer and porter. They may even reveal the Truth.
