Brewed with a hefty amount of oats, this silky smooth Double Oatmeal Stout was fermented with locally sourced Ethiopian Cocoa Nibs from Ethereal Confections in Woodstock and freshly roasted, Kenyan Peaberry and Ethiopian Dry Process coffee from Ten Drops in Plainfield.

32oz Growler

Pollyanna
15 Locks pays tribute to the I&M Canal and it's significance to the area. Pretty cool. She pours the color of strong coffee but as it fills the glass becomes obvious that this beer is nothing if not black. A high pour from the growler produced a cascade Guiness-like effect and made for a sturdy two fingers worth of mocha foam that leaves behind spotty lace as it settles into its more comfortable cap.
I noticed at the brewery that the longer this beer sits the better it smells and tastes, so time is needed. The coffee is bold with bright acidity while the stout is dark with a moderate roast and big berry notes; underripe blueberries and blackberries. A dash of cream and hearty, earthy cocoa round it all out. The nose is complex and mouthwatering. Very nice.
The roast brings a bit of bitterness and along with the acidity from the coffee makes for delicious. The dark berries are present, again underripe, and a little earthy. The cocoa nibs are straight up dark chocolate with earthy elements as well, also somewhat bitter. The coffee with cream & sugar aspect hits again and a little hazelnut for good measure. The swallow is soft roastiness with earthy cocoa nibs and soft anise. Bueno.
Now, this mouthfeel may throw some off a bit, I rather prefer it to other big stouts. The weight is a touch of moderate with a creamy, velvety feel. It doesn't sport the mouthcoating viscosity like some others, and I enjoy that. The roast bitterness matches, and surpasses, any residual sweetness and actually has a semi-dry finish. Immensely drinkable.
Pollyanna has done a great job with 15 Locks and it is nice to see that they used a local coffee roaster as well. This is a well made, complex, even handed stout with numerous flavor profiles all working in unison as they should. Good job, Pollyanna. Good job!

Big and bold roasted coffee and chocolate aroma to the nose.
Tasty enough I bought a bomber.
