16oz pint at the Underground in DTYEG, they of the apparent home away from home list of this brewery's offerings. Named after a former mayor of Olds.
This beer appears a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with a thin cap of wispy and faintly bubbly tan head, which leaves some decent broken cobweb lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of roasted, bready and doughy cereal malt, some muddled black stone fruitiness, a further free-range ashiness, and some plain earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and bready caramel malt, medium chocolate, still hard to differentiate dark orchard fruity notes, some wet char, a hint of stale cafe-au-lait, and more understated earthy, leafy, and grassy green hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly benign in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a touch of char getting in the way of the ideal here. It finishes off-dry, the malt and cocoa essences most prominent in their lingering poses.
Overall - this is certainly an agreeable enough version of the style, with a nice even (smoky) sweetness exhibited throughout. Full-flavoured, and easy to put back, I do believe that they have a winner on their hands with this one.
