Pours a dark brown with some reddish hues, little to no head.
Smell is rather weak. Some roasted malt, some molasses.
Taste is bitter chocolate, sweet malt and molasses and licorice.
Mouthfeel is sort of watery oily.
I was with someone else who really disliked this beer. I found it okay but its probably got some imperfections hidden in all that darkness.

Tugboat is a great establishment and some of their beers are first class. But the tradeoff for all their cozy sincerity is an inconsistency of beercraft that at times makes for a downright unpalatable brew. The pint of porter I drank there recently is a case in point. It was awful.
It started out well enough -- a little thin in the body but flavorful and with a nice measure of clean, hoppy bitterness. But the initial presentation of flavor yielded no sustain and the more I drank, the worse it got. After a few sips, the taste resembled a tawdry burst of roasty malt submerged in something ill-defined and acrid. The poor thing tasted tired and sad. The aroma was scant though malty and the aftertaste needed more cleaning than my refrigerator. This combined with zero carbonation and a mouthfeel that was downright vulgar to produce a most regrettable mistake of a beer.
Tugboat doesnt give their porter any particular name. Its just porter. I could think of a few names that might apply but Ill hold my tongue. Its worth repeating that Tugboat is really a great little place to get acquainted with a craft beer. But much of their work is hit or miss. This one was a miss.
