On-tap at Tugboat Brewing Company, Portland, OR
A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that consistently covered the surface and left lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark, roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has lots of flavors of dark, roasted malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This stout seemed like it could have more in the way of bolder aromas and flavors considering its strength.
Serving type: on-tap

A: Poured a big black color with a small brown cap, hefty.
S: Booze, chocolate, big roastiness, coffee, perhaps some liquorice
T: This RIS is in your face raw ad will make a man out of you. Big roasted malt and booze jumps right out, not for the faint of heart. Dark chocolate, light coffee, liquorice and dark fruits.
M: Hearty, big body, good carbonation and loads of flavor.
O: I enjoyed this kick in you in the balls RIS

Pitch black colour with a creamy tan head. Poor head retention.
Light and fruity aroma with some earthy notes. It lacks depth, punch and complexity for me.
Moderate roasty flavour with some earthiness. Big bitterness. No real perception of 13% alcohol.
Medium light body. Moderate carbonation. Very thin for a RIS. Interesting.
For me this stout doesn't quite hit the mark. There is some flavour here but it is a bit bland and dull. I can appreciate the lack of real alcohol flavour but that doesn't make up for the really thin mouthfeel and lack of flavour.

After a short 2 block walk from my hotel, I grabbed a booth to sit down and enjoy this brew I'd read about in a Portland magazine.
Until it was almost gone it was opaque as midnight and when there was a half gulp left in the bottom of my 8 oz glass it was chocolatey, ruby color.
It smelled like dark chocolate to me and the first taste was surprisingly NOT stinging of alcohol. The 13.5 ABV was well masked. The bartender asked if I'd had it before to explain why it was only an eight ounce glass.
The mouthfeel was surprisingly light as opposed to what I was expecting. While a sipper, it was also refreshing.
I'm wishing there was a place like this back home. I would love a glass or two of this every once in a while. I just finished my glass as Green Onions finished on the sound system. I think it's time for that coffee porter!
