When I spotted this on the Tugboat bulletin board, I questioned whether it was accurate...a "summer stout"? I was told this is the less potent option of winter's "Chernobyl Stout". The (estimated) ABV is 6.5% and serving was in a standard pint glass during Happy Hour: $2.50.
A: Almost perfectly black, capped with a 1/2 finger of creamy light tan head. Layered sheets of equally creamy lace, blanketing most of the glass.
S: At first, smell was nil. I mean absolutely nothing rising from the glass. As it warmed, a lovely subtle chocolate, dark-roasted and malty, mingled with light notes of vanilla, molasses and a heavier herbal hopping. In regards to the smell, if you wait on it, it will come...
T: Bitter, quite bitter in fact. Lots of roasted chocolate. Bitter, almost blackened. Some chicory/sourness in the roast. Just a little powdered cocoa sweetness creeps in; otherwise; this is purely dark and bitter. Whatever hops are in there only augment the bitterness.
M: A medium mouthfeel with a modest creaminess - any carbonation is subtle. Lingering bittering/roastedness in the mouth and a sharp acidic lactic flavor does detract.
D: One of the more drinkable beers from this brewery, but still nothing to rave about. What I enjoyed was the full chocolate-y bitter flavor and the pretty appearance. A pretty good stout that I'd probably choose to have again.
