What a nice find in Banner Elk. Pours dark black nice tan head. Lots of roasted malt and coffee nose. Rye is there but not overpowering. Lacks a little on the finish but a solid beer . Took a growler of it to go and it was just as good 6 hrs late. Sitting on the porch atop of Beech Mtn

Not terrible, but needs more of a hoppy taste

Pours a deep rich black with a more viscous body than a typical black IPA. Minimal head that disappears completely after a few sips. Just a bit of rich malt and fruit on the nose - quite subtle. Taste is big with molasses and dark fruit flavors. Very solid beer from this relatively new brewery.

everyone is giving this 4's and 5's so far. Do they work for the brewery? was this a bad keg I had perhaps? I am willing to try it again, and other offerings from this new brewery

I'm still trying to determine what I am looking for with a Black Ale. Is it supposed to be malty? Hoppy? What the hell is going on?
I can tell you I was pleased with this offering. Sampled straight from the brewery tap. Great taste of roasted malts up front make the initial impression more like a porter. Unfortunately, that is where it ends. I would've liked to had a little more hops on the back end. Maybe if my friends in Banner Elk can trot out an Imperial Black IPA some time. Maybe they already have.
Nonetheless, I rate the beer a four because it was tasty and I enjoyed it. This isn't the Westminster Dog Show and there is no shame in being a good-looking mutt.

This is more like a hoppy porter than any Black IPA I have ever had. Pitch black with a super creamy head. Nice thick mouthfeel which is almost perfect.
