The third and last house beer tasted by half-pint at the brewpub, Hand in Hand, Brighton, on 28/06/06. This is also the strongest one in the house beer range.
A: the special feature of this beer is basically its colour, which comes in cranberry+pomegranate-juice red, with a pink fluffy beer head. Looking slightly bizarre really, although it's not the first time I've seen a beer like this (Banks&Taylor's Phantom is more scary in colour, in fact). Great clarity and low carbonation in the glass.
S: definitely Fuggles hops with a subtle citric-fruity edge. Besides that it smells very much like Ye Olde Trout tasted right before this beer.
T: chewy and fruity just like Ye Olde Trout, with an intriguing sour-fruity edge, but not from any fruits in case anyone suspects fruits are added to this beer to make it red; a bit of earthy edge, like raw, chewy nut-on-skins, lingers in a remote corner of palate in the end, where the body and mouthfeel don't hold very well--not ideal for a 5.2%abv. beer!
M&D: thin-bodied and not perfectly on form, I must say. In a sense this beer tastes nothing too far from Ye Olde Trout; if anything, it perhaps has more fruitiness on the palate, but that's also the side-effect of losing a balance which it should've achieved when served fresher. I can't pinpoint which style it should belong to, but judging from its alc. strength, I submit it in the category of English Strong Ale here, and stand corrected. I only wish next time I could taste it in a better condition.
