a lot of the kettle sours coming out, especially from the new and small breweries have been really disappointing. they usually are just way too acidic, too stinky feety, or just sloppy and thick, so its nice to see one done so well here. the sourness, it needs to be said first, is very minimal. its not replaced or unseated by any bretty funk, thats not here at all, but the souring process must have been cut short, or done minimally, to produce just a little acidity before the lacto was killed in the boil. its darker too, not black or even brown, but a deep deep reddish color, like a tangy dopplebock or something, its very malt driven, even out in front of the lacto, which i really like. its innovative, you just dont see a lot of beers doing this. a little sweet, a little german tasting even, red apples and molasses notes in there, not overly complex but definitely distinct. a little thinner than it seems in body, which helps it be more drinkable. only moderate acidity to this, i like the restraint demonstrated on that. softer carbonation lets the texture of the malt be felt and appreciated too. another clever and tasty beer from these guys.
