“Pure Kriek”, a brewery-only exclusive.

This is the annually produced unblended kriek beer used solely for blending into Bizon. Sampled on tour at Brouwerij Cnudde with Steven. Aged for 1-3 years in the brewery cellar.

Poured from a plastic cube container spigot into a clear plastic cup. Light chestnut brown with a reddish tint. Still.

Aroma is intense cherry and musty cellar funk. Dark cherry skin tannins and balsamic vinegar.

Taste is moderately sour with a juicy dark cherry skin flavor, some light acetic notes, balsamic and apple butter. Still and without carbonation, acceptable since this beer is produced for blending like an unblended lambic. It's fairly intense and has a moderately acetic presence, which isn't noticeable when it's blended into Bizon. Ultimately it tasted like an unblended barrel sample of Bouckaert's original La Folie, but a little more acetic and cherry-forward. A very rare opportunity to sample a special vintage oud kriekenbier at the source.

Cnudde Kriek is made with whole sour cherries from the brewery garden and supplemented with Belgian cherries from the Limburg region. A linen bag with 35 kg. of fresh fruit is then aged for at least a year in 300 L containers of Cnudde Bruin.
