Had this beer on draft at Home D in State College. Apparently it was just tapped. To me, the description had disaster written all over it. Black IPA with chipotle. Sounds like a little too much for a small brewer to pull off. Well, I ended up having three of them.
The beer pours a dark, almost opaque black with a solid half inch of coffee cream head which lasted through half the beer. Wonderful aroma of cocoa and pepper. As far as the flavor, I was most surprised. The base was a well balanced IPA with more floral than bitter hops. That profile, to me, lends itself better to the Black IPA. The dark malts were quite roasty and gave a nice chocolate flavor to the IPA. It is at the end of the drink where I picked up the chipotle. Smoky and peppery with only a slight touch of heat. To me, I would have liked a touch more heat but this beer was very impressive and very well made. A great compliment to the jalapeƱo bacon pizza.
Beautiful lacing and mouthfeel as expected for an IPA. Great Job Robin Hood!!
