I can only rate what I had and I have to assume that maybe it was a bad batch or something happened in the can. It poured the color of strong coffee with a head that was light tan and very rocky the head disappeard within seconds. It smelt pretty great like baking cocoa and coconut with a little woodsy pine. The taste though. It tasted like a mouth full of nickles with no hint of coconut or malt just acrid hops. I have to assume from the taste and the pour that somehow the cans I got had gotten contaminated. It had that very distinct "bacteria was here" thing going on. Also just a note the profile states that this is an 8.1% beer, the can states 7.5%.

Currently sipping on the newest batch of this from a can... no can date but it must be from within the last month, and the can says it's 7.5% ABV, and brewed with toasted coconut. A cool idea, and one that makes sense; surprised no one else that I can think of has come up with it before. There are coconut-infused stouts, of course, and I've had a few coconut IPAs (some better than others), so why not mix it all up and make a darker IPA with the same adjunct. Who knows what'll happen?

The pour is an opaque dark brown color that looks pretty much black when it's all poured in the glass, but as its pouring it definitely has a mocha-look to it. Chalky and cloudy, viscous and dense. My last Austin Street beer a few days ago was kind of similar in terms of density, so maybe they should look into centrifuging their beer. There's probably a lot of gunk in here, but I can't tell obviously due to the dark appearance. The head is very nice, building up with two solid fingers that retain quite well. Lots of good lacing too. I think this has left a pretty good impression overall.

The nose is, well, coconut. It reminds me of my favorite bright coconut IPA, Smooth Beats Miami (Finback/J. Wakefield) but with some added roastiness. Some light coffee notes, herbal hops, and some pine resin with a touch of citrus as well. The coconut is, obviously, the star of the show, and it lends a tropical note with its distinct dessert-like complexion showing itself quite prominently. That said, there's a little ethanol heat here and maybe a bit of chocolate as well. It's interesting and intriguing, but maybe not quite where I want it to be. Though I'm not sure what I "want" from this, anyway...

My palate is completely thrown for a loop upon first sip. It's like a combination of coffee, coconut, chocolate, vegetal notes, grassiness, herbal and earthy hops, overripe mango, and straight-up dirt(?!) all mashed together to make the weirdest possible flavor combination I can think of. There's so much going on here, and, even though not all of it works, it's very fun and interest-piquing. Every sip brings out unusual stuff that feels so unlike anything I've had before. Looking it up, it makes total sense to use Cashmere hops in this one, but the Simcoe adds a ridiculous amount of piney and citrusy complexity. Smooth and surprisingly velvety mouthfeel with good, stable carbonation. Honestly, I recommend this just because it's so oddball. This is for the person that unironically enjoys the oft-polarizing beers such as Indra Kunindra (Ballast Point) or Creme Brulee (Southern Tier). Stuff like that. It's weird, wild, and will definitely not be something you're "meh" about.

From a 32oz growler, filled at the brewery 03/15/18. Served in an IPA glass.

Pours a rich, semi-opaque chocolatey brown with a huge pouffy mocha head. Very good retention and thick, gobby swirls of lacing.

Moderately strong nose of coconut, chocolate and minerals.

Taste is dry and powdery, coconut is less apparent in the taste than in the nose, coffee and cocoa, something green and leafy, finishing with milk chocolate and a mild mineral tang.

Feel is clean and smooth, medium-light bodied and brightly carbonated. Drinks very nicely.

Note: this is a coconut black ale, not an AIPA as described at the time this review was written. If it really is 8.1% it sure hides it well. Sort of reminds me of Baileys Irish Cream, coconut not withstanding.
