Another entry in Black Hog’s milk stout series, this time we have a caramel macchiato variant. I was not a big fan of the hazelnut one I tried a while back, so hopefully this one will fair better as I found the hazelnut one not sweet enough for a milk stout. Let’s see what it’s all about
Pours a rich velvety brown with over 2 fingers of tan head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves decent lacing
Ahh, there’s the sweetness I’m looking for in the style. It’s not overpowering but nicely balanced. I’m picking up on aromas of rich caramel, cocoa powder, vanilla wafer, toasted pumpernickel, light roast coffee, and, ironically, more hazelnut than the actual hazelnut one
It takes on a bit more of a dry and roasted character in taste, but the sweetness is still present. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting burnt bread, medium roast coffee, salted caramel, creamy vanilla, and light earthy hops. The swallow brings notes of cocoa powder, medium roast coffee, salted caramel, and roasted malt
A medium body pairs with gentle creamy carbonation, resulting in a very slick beer. Finishes quite sticky with a balanced sweetness
This one wasn’t great by any means, but it’s certainly better than that last one. For an easy drinking stout you could do worse
