Oak Lagered Doppelbock

Body pours an attractive auburn brown. Small but nice head upon pouring from the twelve ounce can. Not much lacing throughout the tasting.

The nose features sweet malt and a bit of oak. As the glass warmed, the sweetness grew in strength.

Taste generally follows nose but adds more oak and a bit of hoppiness. A nicely malt forward beer.

Mouthfeel was good thanks to a nice carbonation, making the beer a smooth drinker. The ABV is felt more than tasted adding a background warmth.

Overall a good beer and a treat for malty oak fan

 

 

 

Pours murky, light copper in color with one inch head. Taste is big oak and bready malt. Heavy body, moderate low carbonation, slightly sweet. Very oaky dopplebock. Not bad but I want the non Oaked version. Solid, not great.

A - Dark burgundy amber colored pour with moderate dense white lacing.

S - Light sweet caramel malt aroma and not much more.

T - Skunky sweet malt, that's it.

M - Big medium body.

O - This beer is pretty embarassing. More than willing to try it again and adjust this review but it's less than noteworthy.

Look: Pours a nice amber color with a ruby tint to it. The beer is pretty clear. There was a pretty one-finger tan-colored head that slowly reduced to a thin layer.

Smell: Up front, there are some nice fruity notes like dark cherries, raisins, and banana. Lots of esters. Subtle cocoa and vanilla notes, as well as some spiciness. I detect a mild acidity on the finish that smells really nice; kind of smells a bit vinous like red wine too, which is pretty cool. As it warms, that note transforms to a soft red wine vinegar note. Notes of yeast and brown bread on the finish. Admittedly, I opened this soon after taking it out of the fridge, so it will probably be more expressive on the nose as it warms up.

Taste: It's very tasty and ridiculously drinkable for 9% ABV. It's so refreshing and balanced. If this was a blind tasting, I may have thought that this was a Belgian Strong Dark Ale instead of a doppelbock. I suppose that a Belgian beer may have a more yeasty, clovey profile. Up front, this beer is malty and fruity with notes of brown bread, dark cherries, and raisins. The finish is pretty dry with soft tannins and notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Very delicious.

Feel: The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium. The mouthfeel is very nice - it's slightly chewy and finishes crisp and clean.

Overall: This is my first OEC beer. This is one of the better Doppelbocks that I have tried. I definitely look forward to trying more OEC beers in the future!

Pours opaque very light brown with a tan head. Oak and caramel malt create a toasted caramel potency in both smell and taste. Huge brown bread, decent dried dark fruits, a touch of honey, and a kiss of vanillins in the nose. Taste has a hint of poppy seed added. Feel is wet but dries out, sharp finish, elevated. Really nice work here

 

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a dark orange with tan head. Murky, but not too much. Nose is sweet malts, toffee, yeast, orange, wheat, and a nice floral note.

The taste is not really in line with the nose. Grapefruit comes through immediately. I am actually really surprised that this is a doppelbock. Bitter, wheat, grass, plum, and a hop bitterness that overpowers the sweetness. A touch of a smoky note.

An interesting take on the doppelbock, but definitely not traditional for the style. Buy one if you want to explore new things! Mouthfeel is fairly light.

these open capture lagers they are doing are insane, i have loved all of them, and this one ranks with the very best, a sturdy and subtly complex example of the style with a wonderful texture and enough nuance to make it stand out as super unique. medium amber to lighter brown in color, a bronze glow to it, some luster but also not perfectly clear, and a thick and frothy inch of creamy khaki head that is essentially permanent in the glass. aroma of old oak and even some maple and cedar wood to me, but not a barrel aged vibe or anything. the malt profile seems toasty and german and sweet, pretty straightforward though, the complexity for me is in the ferment. bready and old worldy lager yeast but also just enough sort of estery funk and spice to really make this special, and there is even more of that in the flavor. hints of dried red apple, raisin, and cognac to me, a little alcohol warming it up. now the oak, a port wine note, gingerbread, and something as english as it is german in the grain. no bretty funk or anything, but it remains slightly wild tasting, rustic but well refined. overall downright fantastic, so glad they are doing these cans now and that they are getting out to idaho. this is world class.

 

L: Hazy barley brown. Moderately carbonated and very glossy.

S: Lots of tangy, even fruity, barley, with a hint of oak.

T: Sweet, like candied plum, with a bitter finish. Oak barrel is doing lots of work.

F: Well balanced and drinkable.

O: Hits hard but drinks easy. Pretty straightforward.

Pours a frothy creamy 1.5 finger head with great retention, messy lacing, semi hazy auburn slight ruby color

Nose sweet toasted malt, reddish candy malt with a bit of sweet bread crust, a bit biscuity, caramel toffee notes, a little caramelized honey, but fairly light

Taste fair sweet toasted grainy malt, reddish toasted malt, a touch biscuity, light caramel, caramelized honey as well, some caramel and toffee notes, bread crust, with a bit of honey caramel glaze, fair spicy hops, a touch of dark fruits but less than I expected, a bit of perfumey alcohol and me bitterness, sticky finish

Mouth is med to fuller bod, med to higher frothy carb, touch of warming alcohol

Overall meh, surprising for OEC, too much of the sweet malt, very little actual fruit, sweet flavors that went beyond the nice malt, not that enjoyable

Deep brown with ruby notes, just barely able to see through it when held up to the light. Just off-white head which leaves some sticky lacking on the glass. Nose is bready, nutty, raisiny, boozy... sweet malt like when you spill some beer on your shirt and you smell it the next day. Taste is sweet bread, more dark fruit like prune juice. A little bit of bitterness at the end with some boozy notes, but mostly sticky bread malt forward. Really nice.

Not much to look at but smooth to drink for sure.... Maybe a bit on the boozy side, but this style often is ... Bought a single can and enjoyed on an icy cold day... Warmed me right up!

12oz can from Homebrewstuff. Dark amber pour, spotty head. Malty aroma, sweet, woody. Taste focuses on the malts, mildly sweet, woody, a bit dry. Some light savory accents crop up at different times. Nice.

Opaque dark purple appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice khaki head; decent lace.

Oak, plum & mild caramel notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Plum, tart cherry, oak & caramel flavors. An interesting take on the style; I liked it.
