Our German style dunkel is brewed with European Munich and Cara Munich malts along with a touch of chocolate and rye malt using a traditional step infusion mash. It is gently hopped using German Tettnang and Spalt Select. After the boil it rests in our copper coolship for 1 hour and is then transferred over our baudelot cooler.

From a can. Pours a clear rich chocolate brown. Smells sweet and caramelly. Flavor follows smell with rich caramel flavors and a good sweetness. Medium full bodied and smooth.

Had on tap at the brewery. Pours clear, faint chestnut in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is cocoa and toasted malt. Medium light body, moderate low carbonation, slightly sweet. Another really good for the style beer.

Mostly opaque brown pour with a big tan head, rungs of lacing here and there. Yeasty nose with a slight pumpernickel emphasis with date, nuts, tobacco, big earth. Taste adds dried dark berries and faint toasted caramel, yeast still leads with other nose notes. Feel is yeasty, medium bodied, sneaky sharp finish, drier overall. Nice work here

This one pours a fairly dark brown color, with a small white head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like toasted malt, toasted nuts, tobacco, caramel, and floral hops.
As is the usual with their lagers, this is just about spot on, with a rich bittersweet malt character – bready, nutty, and slightly spicy, with a hint of floral and tea-like hops.
This is light bodied, clean, slightly creamy, and super drinkable.
This is one of my favorite styles, and OEC pretty nailed it completely here.

Foggy acorn brown with a tall khaki foam head.
Deliciously malty, a little nutty and even a touch woody, it’s like pumpernickel with the slightest hint of allspice through a softly fluffy medium body that finishes lightly paper dry. Some tobacco characteristics emerge after having a bite to eat.

Great dark amber body, partially cloudy; decent carbonation; 1 1/2 fingers of dense, semi-creamy, light khaki foam, long lasting. Nice dark malt aroma; earthy esters noted. Full, rich, malty flavor; light caramel notes with a touch of dark grain sweetness; no perceived hop bitterness per se. Medium-heavy body; smooth and silky on the palate; refined residual sugar feel.
I'd say this is a nicely done representation of a German dunkel bier. The can (and brewery web site) notes indicate some rye malt was used although I don't really detect its presence. Overall, a very good dark lager.

No can date
Pours a frothy off-white 1/2 finger head with moderate retention, clear fairly dark mahogany to ruby color
Nose is big, lots of sweet bread, toasted crusty dessert bread, baking spices like straight cinnamon bread, a bit of toffee and molasses, caramelized sugar notes, some chocolate pastry, some dark fruits, almost like a holiday cake bread mixed with dunkel
Taste more dunkel like, lots of toasted sweet bread crust, some baking spices as well but not straight cinnamon like the nose, a bit of dark fruits with a hint raisin bread again, and touch of little prune fig like, a bit of chocolate pastry again but not too sweet overall, a little of that caramel toffee thing, light herbal hops with med-light bitterness, finishes a bit drier
Mouth is med bod, med to a bit higher frothy carb
Overall pretty good, all around nice dunkel, the aromatics were quite interesting and very holiday like coincidentally, and no adjuncts all from the yeast, malt and hops.
