Got this from hopsolutely a couple summers back. Thanks again, guys!
From a 375 into a snifter. Only a paper slung over the neck on this one.
Vintage: 2014
APPEARANCE: Opened without much of a hiss and poured out clear black and flatter, yielding a 1+ finger, thicker looking tan head with good retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head recedes to a half wisp and bubbly cap. Splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving good lacing down the glass. Can definitely appreciate a flatter, more syrupy look in a big stout.
SMELL: Lots of tar and leather on this one, with burnt notes, ash, and touches of anise as well. Bold enough, with hints of molasses behind the leather and tar. Reminds me of some stouts brewed on this side of the pond.
TASTE: Tar, ash, burnt malts and lots of leather up front leading into the swallow. Boozy enough at the finish as well. Bold and lingering finish is plenty alcoholic, with strong flavors of leather, ash, anise and licorice flavors, tar and burnt grains. Lots of black malts must have been used here. Could be mistaken for a very hot tar mat with burnt tires lying around.
PALATE: Fuller body with lower levels of carbonation. Silky and slick on the palate, goes down with a good burn at the swallow and finishes quite sticky. A good dose of alcohol and heat linger.
OVERALL: This one looks the part, but after that, it’s kind of all downhill. The overly ashy, leathery, tar-like character is rather off putting. Some Euro stouts have this quality but not nearly to this degree. This is a recipe I would probably re-work, unless they’re into this type of thing. Not all that pleasant and was happy to leave this one to drain. Let’s hope the BA version is better. Cheers guys!

I had only a small amount of this, on-tap at Volo. It was very thin, quite boozy and had a bit of an off-flavour. IMO, avoid this beer - you can pick something better.
