Controversy rocks the Iceland as one of their young blood breweries uses indigenously farmed whale mill as an actual ingredient to the process. Where protein delicacies, gelatin and fish bladder are more common to the brewing process than many believe, It appears that the whale is off limits. ...except for Stedji!
But with no flavor or aroma of sea food to alert the nose or palate, a toastier, smokier set of flavors captivate the senses with mesquite and campfire. Deeper contemplation unmasks the eastery tones underneath with sweet grape candy and grilled apple.
The middle taste begins to dry, taking with it much of the beer's sweetened body and fruit candy character; leaving behind the smoky-sweetness of hickory and mesquite. Toasted bread crust, almond and a mild peppercorn character rounds out its fatty and juicy center before finish.
Mellowing considerably, the ale trails with slim sweet creaminess and a semi-dry and ashy finish. As the ale seems to dissolve and float above the tongue, its peppery finish is highlighted by mild alcohol; returning to fruity rum character in aftertaste. Leaving any trace of actual whale character entirely to the imagination.
