12 FL OZ bottle
Served in a snifter
2017
This beer pours a deep, deep brown hue. It is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves no lacing.
The smell is raspberry, vanilla, and caramel. I swear I get chocolate too.
Raspberry forward flavor. I get vanilla. Then I get the base barleywine. I get some caramelized sugar. Caramel and toffee. A light earthy, toasted biscuit flavor.
Medium bodied with a syrupy mouthfeel
Bourbon barrel aged Life was one of the best beers that I have ever had. This is good. I am sure I held onto it for too long. Plus these sweet pastry beers are not necessarily my favorites.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours a murky deep brown in color with virtually zero head
S- malty aroma with notes of caramel, butter toffee, brown sugar, fig & raisin. Raspberry and vanilla are both present, along with oaky bourbon that seems to enhance the vanilla.
T-Sweet raspberry is noticed first, followed by sweet malty notes of caramel, molasses and dessert bread. Mid-palate brings out notes of cocoa and vanilla, with the raspberries sticking through. The finish gives a strong note of prune and lingers of raspberry and light bourbon barrel
M- medium body with low carbonation leads to a creamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish
O- solid English Barleywine with the adjuncts coming through just enough, an outstanding beer

English Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with cocoa nibs, raspberries, and vanilla. Poured from a bottle into a MadTree Teku. The pour is dark and murky with a reddish mahogany color. There is very little carbonation and not much head (typical for a barrel-aged beer and I do not consider it a flaw). On the nose I get strong aromas of raspberries, cocoa, and toasted malt as well as slight hints of bourbon and toasted oak. It smells awesome!
Full bodied with a super-creamy feel and a sinfully rich flavor. Raspberries definitely make the strongest impression on you at first. They are tart, but the sweetness from the malt and the slight bitterness from the cocoa nibs balance it out almost perfectly. As the flavors develop, the sweetness is enhanced by vanilla and bourbon barrel near mid-palate. All of these flavors intermingle perfectly and the balance is amazing. The raspberries win their little battle for supremacy and carry through the finish. Sweet notes of toffee and raspberries linger nicely.
A buddy of mine split a bottle of this with me and I absolutely loved it. I was delighted to see that Listermann still had some bottles for sale at the brewery when I went to the Fiona release party a couple weeks ago. This is one of the best barleywines I have had in a while and I hope Listermann brings it back sometime. If it had a little more bourbon barrel character, it would be the kind of flavor combination in an English-style Barleywine that you would expect from Goose Island as a Bourbon County Barleywine variant.
