22 ounce bottle into a tulip snifter. Bottled 1/19/17, had 2/25/17. Aged in Cabernet barrels.
Pours a mostly opaque dark brown, with a one inch foamy, quickly dissipating head and some soapy lacing. Smells of wine, malt, chocolate, cocoa, some yeast, grapes, light vanilla- more as it warms, some oak, light maple, some brown sugar. The taste is also more wine forward, then malt, grapes, chocolate, yeast, vanilla, some caramel, light molasses and oak, a bit of licorice. A light sweetness overall. Smooth, an appropriate level of carbonation. Has a decent body, but it's a little thin feeling.
Definitely Cabernet barrel forward, a terrific job of aging. Great aroma and very good flavor. It's a really good base beer, but it's left a little thinner from the barrels. Solid effort with a style you wouldn't think would play nice with wine barrels.
