Spellbound Brewing "Peach IPA"
12 fl. oz can without production codes or freshness dating
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: An inverted pour delivers a two-finger thick head of off-white atop a very hazy golden-amber colored body. I'm waiting to see how the head dwindles as it warms up a bit and it seems to be holding pretty well. I find some peach in the aroma, and some sweetish malt, backed by a touch of citrus (mainly orange). The peach is pretty clear, but not bright, and it seems completely real. It's been a few minutes and the head has dropped by now but the surface is still completely covered, and there are nice rings of lace where the head once stood. On to the flavor... it's malty upfront, lightly citrusy with orange and the peach, and then the bitterness rises across the middle, and finally I get more of the peach in the finish along with some earthiness, spiciness, and a light note of pine. There's a touch of grapefruit in there as well. The maltiness is biscuity and grainy with a little bit of golden caramel to it,, and something else... it's almost as if there's a touch of chocolate malt to it, or maybe carabrown. It's definitely a malt forward beer though, although it is balanced in the end. I'm not sure where the bitterness falls, it's pretty high but hard to tell with all the malt, but there's no mistaking that this is an IPA and not a peach beer that's been labeled an IPA. The peach is just an added note in an otherwise solid, straightforward IPA. Looking back, the lacing is great and I've still got a solid surface covering. What were initially thin rings have spread and now a tattered sheet hangs beneath them. If it weren't so hazy, bordering n becoming cloudly like a hefewweizen, I'd score the appearance better. What else? Mouthfeel. Medium bodied but dextrinous, leaning toward full bodied. Overall it's pretty nice. The peach is enough to give it a little something extra without becoming the start of the show, and it remains a solid IPA. I wish there were more citrusy hops to it but then you probably wouldn't get the peach in the same way so I'll trust that they've already worked it out to get the balance that it has. Nicely done.

This is a great summer beer! I had it on draft at the brewery a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised by it, as I don't usually take to non-citrus beers. This beer, however has more of a citrusy taste to it. I suppose the dry-hop gives it a citrus taste? Bought it canned today and I am definitely enjoying it with this beautiful weather. Amber color - normal color of an American IPA. Can definitely taste the PEACH coming through in it! Advertised as peach infused on the can. Good blend of hoppy and PEACHY! 4/5 stars! Good job Spellbound BC - out of Mt. Holly, NJ.

Ahh first beer of vacation! Burnished clear gold, lots of lacing, smell of peach preserves, taste slightly bitter, refreshing, altogether a good choice!
