i have to at least give some credit here, as this is one of the first beers i have known to use maca root, a cool medicinal herb for boosting libido and such, which i dont really know in nature or in medicine, but it sure doesnt seem to taste great, and its hard to drink enough of this very middling beer to be able to appreciate any effects it might have on mind or body. its flat black from the tap at the brewery with a short tan head, a little thin looking, but appealing still. the nose is where i start to get turned off, bitter and astringent well beyond any dark grains i know, must be the maca, earthy sure, sort of soily for a moment, but then downright harsh, and that carries over to the flavor too where the roasty dark grains and stale coffee elements cant seem to make the maca aspect taste appealing, if indeed thats whats happening here. its also pretty tannic it seems, and could just be an amateur brew, sparged or mashed way too hot or something, but this seems like a weird almost gross flavor from the maca, at least to the best of what i can decipher. thin in feel, but thats the least of its problems, its bitter and harsh like burnt coffee, oversteeped black tea, and natural licorice or something, more than i want for sure, and half a glass is about where i have to stop. i can see the potential here though, a more mellow base beer, some balancing element, i dont know, something is needed to make this at least a little bit drinkable. no obvious effects from the maca...
