I can't remember what beer it was that I ordered I am pretty sure it was a white monkey. There beer selection is okay nothing compared to capital ale house or mekongs of course. I will say this tho there pizza is simply amazing. Basically if you want a non-common beer and a fantastic pizza this is my first choice hands down.

Located near the railroad tracks of Shockoe Bottom, this place is ‘famous’ for its pizza in the Richmond area.

A: Could be one of the busiest places I have ever been too for a dining experience, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The place is not overly big, not a ton of indoor or outdoor seating, which makes it seem a lot more crowded.

Q: I found the pizza and the beer to be of good quality. No real issues with freshness or anything of the ilk.

Ser: There are ample waitresses around and they are constantly in motion. Very friendly, responsive and knowledgeable about the drink and pizza menus.

Sel: The selection is quite small. I really would not consider this a ‘beer’ destination by any stretch. On my visit, they had two beers, lager and pilsner from Legend Brewing, Magic Hat #9, Sam Adams Boston Lager and Yuengling.

Overall, this is a great place for pizza in Richmond if you hit it at an ‘off’ time. Try to avoid the lunch and dinner hours for smaller crowds. Not really a place for beer however, but that does not mean it isn’t a great place for lunch. Definitely worthy of a visit if you are in the mood for fresh pizza!

Bottom line...sorry, couldn't resist the pun...this isn't a beer bar as much as a locals hangout and "renowned" pizza place. Has some local beers on tap and a few micros in bottle and there is some rotation w/ seasons, but this is not what I consider a beer bar. But what disappointed me was not the beer selection but the food. This is supposed to be Richmond's best pizza place and I will admit that my slice of pizza was huge, but it was also $6 - I could've bought to regular slices somewhere for that much. Thick, deepcrust style but taste reminded me of Pizza Hut with bland cheese and sauce. This is more of a party vibe with the bands and the deck/outdoor seating.

Living in Richmond for a year, many have mentioned Bottoms Up. So finally I got to go.

The atmosphere was pretty crazy. We went on a Sunday and there were still a ton of people there. We got to sit outside, right below the train overpasses, so that was pretty bizarre for the most part. It's more of a family place it seems like, so there were many kids there, too. I think some music was playing on the inside, though. Sounded like a creole / jazz hybrid to me.

Their specialty is gourmet pizza, and though a medium is pretty expensive, I made two meals out of it so that cut it down a bit. Plus there was fresh shrimp and feta cheese on it, which was awesome.

Unless I'm crazy (and it was also a Sunday like I said), their beer selection didn't seem like it was all that great. The most attractive thing on tap to me was Magic Hat #9, mainly because Magic Hat's now being distributed to Richmond. Should I have asked for a beer menu / Would I have gotten one if I did? Not sure, though next time I'll have to see I suppose.

I'd certainly rather go back to other places (especially since there are great places within walking distance in the museum district), but I wouldn't mind going again. The atmosphere and gourmet pizza may be it's most attractive quality to some.

Bottoms Up is a cool little pizza place in a really neat location beneath a group of overpasses (the triple crossing) in the Shockoe Bottom section. In fact, they use the criss-crossed iron pattern of the nearby trestle in their logo. The whole place is small, but it's clean and it has a real college feel to it (it's far more a bar than a pizza joint at night). The main bar is a good size considering the space they have available, and although they only have 6 taps the selection is good (2 beers from Legend, Newcastle Brown, Mobjack Pale Ale, Paulaner Hefe... Coor's Light). It's very comfortable, and the exposed brick walls, beams, and air ducts give it character. There are some comfortable booths along the opposite wall which seem to always be full. And no wonder, the pizza is great! They offer appetizers, soups, salads, pastas, burgers and sandwiches as well; but the main emphasis is on their delicious signature pizzas. The crust is lightly crispy, airy and thick; and they don't skimp on the topping. A single slice is $5.75, a medium pie is $16.50, and a full 16"er is $20.50. Standard pies (and thin crust) are a little cheaper ($3.50/8.50/10.95), but by the time you add all of the extras it'll work out pretty much the same. Of course, some people do like their pizzas plain. There's also a smaller bar upstairs, and outdoor seating when the weather's nice. Sunday night is Jazz Night, and they run different specials for Monday night football. Since it's so close to so many other good spots (including Richbrau and the Capital Ale House) it's certainly worth a stop for a bite to eat!

Ahhh...Bottoms Up Pizza. *THE* pizza place in Richmond. Located under one of the vast railroad trestles that wind through the downtown area, Bottoms Up Pizza offers an incredible array of mouth-watering pizza (my personal favorite: Roasted red pepper and sun-dried tomato). Located in the Shockoe Bottom area, this is a favorite for many lunch-seeking clock-punchers who work downtown.

Sporting both an upper and lower outside deck, this place is hopping on a Friday night. Funcional booths and "garage-door" type windows offer patrons a comfotable, no nonsense eating location.

Live music on the weekends, with some Karaoke on Thursdays. Jazz night Sunday night with the Butterbean Jazz Quartet.

As expected, it's all about the pizza. The beer selection is not really what you come here for, though B.U.P. does a tolerable job of offering a decent selection of micro brews. Portions are monstrous. The wife and I made the mistake of ordering a salad, appetizer (IMHO, they have the best wings in Richmond), and a *slice* (that's right....slice) of pizza. Little did we know that a slice is 1/4 of a whole pie. And about 4 inches thick, too.

Service can be iffy, depending on the time of day. Sometimes, you are better off ordering your second beer and the asking for the check when the appetizer or pizza arrives.

Beer selection is variable, with some Legend usually on-tap, along with some pretty decent selections (minus the staple macro offerings). I've had Paulaner Hefeweizen before and it was excellent.

For a pizza fix, Bottoms Up is the place to go.

Bottoms Up is first and foremost a pizza place - the beer is more of a complement. The menu is varied, in the pizza place sort of way, and offers a wide range of pizza styles and toppings. Though we've never had anything other than the pizza, I can say it has always been very good. Highly recommend if you are a fan of a good pizza. The tap selection is somewhat limited, but they do vary it and it contains a nice little mix of styles and locations. I've seen Paulaner Wheat on tap one time, then Widmer Wheat another. Definitely better tap selection than your average pizza parlor.

Beware that the lines to get into this place can be fierce, so be prepared to wait. Service has always been good, though you may want to ask for your check when they bring your pizza and you've gotten a refill on your beer or soda. It is located in the wonderful Shockoe Bottom area (and nearby Shockoe Slip), so there is plenty to do around here. Better to eat first and then walk around afterwards to burn off some of your newly acquired calories! On Saturday there is a Farmers Market within easy walking distance.
