This beer pours with virtually no head. It is a deep brown with copper higlights, reminding me more of a porter than a stout. The aroma is strong on roasted malt, with definite oatmeal and alcohol notes as well. Very sweet, which is a hint of what to expect on the taste. Sweet plums are preset immediately upon the first sip, followed by oatmeal and coffee notes. Roasted coffee with some hop bitterness on the finish. Smooth mouthfeel, but the beer never lets the sweetness subside. It quickly becomes cloying, damaging the drinkability. A level or two below some of the other offerings from River City.
