this one is pretty straightforward, insofar as a barleywine can be. its a little lighter than many, not so heavy on the body or the residual sugar, which i think is a pretty good call here as summer sets in, a little more drinkable, a little less intimidating, still packed with all the dense malt flave anyone could ask for too. its reddish amber colored with a small off white head on it, good clarity and carbonation for the style. the aroma and flavor showcase a rich caramel long cooked maltiness, with nuances of graham cracker, raisins, and rum. it is sweet in the middle and has a little citrus rind bitterness element as balance too, along with a mild hopping on the back end. toffee and dates and booze here, smooth though, not too heavy in body, grainy and even earthy, honey and maple to to it as well. a well made beer, not quite as dynamic or intense as a lot of barleywine can be, but i think thats okay this time of year, and strong ales are among the things these guys are best at, so its always good to see one on when i go in! dont be intimidated, this is delicious.
