Another bummer from NBBC.
Look- hazy straw color with a head that disappeared as fast as I poured it leaving no lacing.
Smell- kind of like lemon pinesol or some king of air freshener. Lemony but not in a pleasant way.
Taste- sour and lemony in an artificial way. Not like a good lemonade. I love good sour ale but this wasn't one.
Feel- carbonated but very light feeling.
Overall not a pleasant beer. Sour ale are some of my favorites but this just missed the mark.

750ml brown glass bottle with unbranded pry-off pressure cap and generally appealing label art purchased at a local bottle shop and served into Jester King stemware in Austin, TX.

Reviewed live as a Berliner Weisse per the label. Brewed with lactobacillus. No ABV is listed. Expectations are moderately high; I've enjoyed what little I've had from this brewery so far and I'm in the mood for a good Berliner weisse.

Served cold. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. White colour. Average creaminess, frothiness, and thickness. Retention is below average - about 1.5-2.0 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes. Average complexion and consistency.

BODY: Lightly hazy yellow-copper. Translucent; semitransparent. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Overall, it's an average looking Berliner weiss. Could definitely be more vibrant. Not unique or special.

AROMA: Lemon and lime are prominent, with some mild tartness, healthy wheat, and pale grains in there. The lacto is subtle. These aromatics suggest a beer which is about a 2/10 in terms of sourness intensity at best. The lime is lovely and evocative, and helps set it apart. I guess the use of lime leaves instead of lime flesh was a good one.

It's a pleasant albeit simple aroma of average strength. I find it inviting.

No conventional yeast, overt alcohol, or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Tartness is mild, and sourness is quite tame - maybe a 3/10 at best - and it's all clean lactobacillus, which lends it a sterile clinical sourness, not a spontaneous wild natural sourness. Not really pucker-inducing, but the light sourness is true to German examples of the style. Predictably, a fresh wheat base provides the refreshing foundation for this ale. The notes of lime leaf are a standout, lending it a citrusy but also lightly minty character which helps lend it needed nuance. The lemon isn't particularly evocative, but the lemongrass is a nice touch.

Overall, this is simple - as are most beers in the style, and the clean sourness is nice. It would be better served by more tartness and a fresher wheat base. Cilantro might help. It's well-balanced and boasts notable cohesion. But it does leave something to be desired; there's really just one layer of flavour and it never really evokes much depth of flavour. Flavour duration and intensity are average.

No yeast character of off-notes come through.

I do like it.

TEXTURE: It's a biteen overcarbonated, but it's aptly smooth, wet, and refreshing. I could go for more of a puckering twang. It drinks easy. Light-bodied. Not too heavy or overbearing on the palate.

This texture is a good companion to the taste, but doesn't elevate the beer.

OVERALL: A very drinkable Berliner Weisse - which is exactly what I think New Braunfels was going for. This is worth trying for fans of the style, but won't impress the discerning drinker. A good brew for a hot summer's day, but don't expect a whole lot of sourness. I do wish the price were better; I couldn't justify purchasing this a second time. It will likely get forgotten; it just doesn't stand out compared to the best German and American takes on the style. I always like to see more Berliner weissbiere on the market, but I wish this one had more interesting characteristics. Pick it up if you see it, but don't go out of your way.

Cloudy straw/dark gold pour with an airy white head that dissipates quickly. Highly carbonated. Very light lemon soda aroma. Mouthfeel is very soda like. Has a slight tart lemon/lime flavor with a bit of grain in the back. There a slightly detergent flavored off-taste. Tartness increases as the beer warms to finish with a more developed lemon flavor but it still tastes too soda like.
