Here's a beer I really wanted to like- it sounds amazing- 20lbs of fresh raspberries together with espresso from Ink & Elm located next door to the brewpub added to a roasty stout. The individual ingredients probably are fantastic, the problem is the way they come together. Something about the raspberries and espresso together just doesn't work- it creates an unfortunate soapiness in taste and slickness in the mouth, and the roastiness is buried as well. The nose is good and the heft of the beer, but the taste is disappointing. No matter, I'd rather see someone take risks like this and not always succeed rather than just the same ol' beer all the time. I have no doubt that if this were either a raspberry stout or an espresso stout it would be very nice- just not together.
