Crowler at RBSG 17 courtesy of Hayduke. Dark golden pour, small foamy head. Hops here tend more to the citrus spectrum, and some rich caramel malts. Sweet, sticky mat flavors, finishes with a savory grapefruit bite.

my crowler says 8.8% abv on this one, but either way its pretty sturdy, not just a little alcohol warmth to this, but also a whole heap of malt structure, some residual sugars, and an intense bitterness, this is tasty and bold, but it might be my least favorite of their beers i have had in recent weeks, not sloppy, but definitely cut from the old school cloth, more bitter than flavorful in terms of the hops, like this might not even be dry hopped at all, seems about as early kettle as they come, and i just dont love it, even though the quality is there in the brew, recipe aside. i feel like this is a style that has evolved beyond this type a little bit, and for the better. amber in color, huge frothy khaki head on it comprised of tiny bubbles and lasting, not quite clear but not sloppy looking at all either. the nose and flavor are about the same, assertive hop bitterness all the way, permeates the nostrils and tongue, intense in a close to overpowering way, but without much character beyond some pithy grapefruit and northwestern woodsy pine, could be simcoe or some c types at work here. the ferment is clean enough, but its already heavy from all the caramel and richer crystal malt in it, palate coating and huge, even without the alcohol thats in the background. it actually does have some balance, its just that everything is enormous. nice with pizza, these types of beer always do better with a food context for me, and it helps here. i am really digging broken horn lately, but i would not rank this among my personal favorites. still, all their crowlers have been awesome, great carbonation and overall beer quality...
