16oz glass at Beer Revolution Oliver in Edmonton. Nice to now try this brewery's offerings without having to drive out of the way to Camrose.
This beer appears a fairly solid black, with prominent bronze highlights, and one healthy finger of puffy, finely foamy, and creamy tan head, which leaves a chunky wall of approaching thunderstorm lace around the glass as it slowly sinks away.
It smells of rich fresh-brewed coffee, bittersweet chocolate, grainy caramel malt, a bit of nutty black licorice, mild black orchard fruit, and musty leafy, earthy, and floral noble hops. The taste is bready caramel malt, a more subdued coffee astringency, muddled bruised apples and pears, pithy bar-top nuts, some additional breakfast cereal graininess, and tame weedy and dead floral hop bitters.
The bubbles are quite understated in their plain and innocuous frothiness, the body a wan medium weight, and mostly smooth, I suppose, as a wee clamminess arises as it warms. It finishes off-dry, just, as the java peters out, and the nutty base malt kind of stumbles while holding the fort.
While this one starts strong, it gently falters, and winds up being a little less than 'epic' in bearing. Easy to drink, sure, but somewhat exhausting by the end - or maybe I'm really just getting tired of coffee-flavoured beer.
