Ever wonder what blueberry pie filling and sand tasted like? Well neither did I but 450 North gave me the unique opportunity with their blueberry, vanilla, cinnamon and brown sugar laced smoothie-style sour ale.
Blueberry Dessert provides us with the visual density of melted sorbet with a rich blueberry puree and a caldering bubbling action that looks something out of the labs of mad science. A clumping dirty froth draws in the nose with its radiant blueberry character with hints of wine and cider. Decadently sweet through, the flavors of pie filling are met with notions of heavy cream, condensed milk, vanilla and maple with pancake fashion.
As the downright thick ale slowly creeps along the middle palate, it flows as easy as Wendy's Frosty through a straw. Persistent with heavy sweetness and bold fruitiness, the taste soon includes the tartness of berry, green apple, lime, lemon, sour white grape and gooseberry. Although pleasantly tart, the heavy beer comes a long way from seeing any proper balance as the session comes to a close.
Cloyingly full and sugary, the Slushy XL beer finishes long, fat and creamy with a tremendous amount of residual cereal, malt and cream sugars. Along with the heavy silt of fruit pieced and parts suspended in the cream and the beer picks up on the peppery tannins of seed, skin and pulp. A long aftertaste of sorbet, milkshake and smoothie clings to the mouth with distracting intensity.
