Still blurring the line that separates sour ale and what's smoothie, 450 North is perfectly happy to dive deeper and deeper into the smoothie end of the pool with a banana, strawberry, chocolate and vanilla with a cherry on top.
Just like pureed fruit cocktail, Banana Split pours like a rusty mud puddle while drawing in the nose with a full fruit scent. A drift of tropical fruit with the soothing scent of vanilla, light chocolate and cream lead into a rich taste of condensed milk, sorbet and sherbet as the initial taste is rife with cereal and fruity sweetness.
The smoothie sour ale fully saturates the tastebuds the middle palate in nearly teeth churning in its intensity. Juicy, creamy and rich, notions of banana milkshakes come to mind. As the listed fruits drape in melted ice cream, the suggestions of vanilla and chocolate soothe the senses before a tangy flavor steps in late. Finishing with a somewhat tannic bite and a citrusy tartness, the late taste is cidery, winey and lightly bittered.
Full bodied, cloying and firmly meant as a dessert beer, the malty-sweetness and banana remnants outlast any sourness as a long aftertaste of fruit peels, piths and pulp linger on the tongue.
