Always blurring the lines that separates sour ale from smoothie, 450 North is perfectly happy to overstep such boundaries with a cake mix, vanilla ice cream, blueberry and marshmallow.
Just like muddled berries in the glass, Ice Cream Cake pours like a ruddy berry smoothie while reeling in the nose with a full blueberry scent. A drift of ice cream shops with the soothing scent of vanilla, cake shop and coffee creamer lead into a rich taste of condensed milk, sorbet and vanilla cake as the initial taste is dense with cereal and fruity.
The smoothie sour ale unabashedly saturates the tastebuds, teeth coating in its intensity. Juicy, creamy and rich, notions of cake batter and do come to mind. As the blueberries fold into ice cream, the suggestions of vanilla and berry soothe the senses before a light acidity steps in late. Finishing with a harsh tannic bite and a citrusy tartness, the late taste is cidery, winey and unnecessarily bittered.
Full bodied, cloying and firmly meant as a dessert beer, the malty-sweetness and berry remnants outlast any sourness as a long aftertaste of fruit peels, piths and pulp take away from both the ice cream and the cake.
