The race to win the smoothie sour game is fierce. To compete in this arena requires a beer of extra large proportions. You could say its more than a game, its a war.
450 North fires shots of banana, orange, vanilla, cream, tangerine and peach with their Call Of 450 as its richly textured banana puddin' looking ale clings to the glass and greets the nose with macerated fruit cocktail, heavy cream and a fruit filled perfume. Expectedly sweet and creamy, the underpinnings of cereal, cream, fructose and dough is the stuff of breakfast bars.
But the star of the game are the fruits. Citrusy, tropical, creamy, cidery, winey and rounded with the acidic zing of stone fruit, the flavors are wrapped in a melon-like juiciness with a tangy late taste. A peppery bitterness comes with fruit pectins and hop resins for an offset of sweetness and a balance for the fruits in a tangy, spicy and juicy finish.
Full bodied, smooth, creamy and plush on the palate, the smoothie ale may be hard to drink but its pleasant to taste. A mere can shared among a mid-sized European village would prove suffice as this ale successfully batters the tatebuds into submission with relative ease.
