The struggle to win the smoothie sour ale game has become a game to master. To expect to gain this status requires a beer of extra large proportions. Its not a game for apprentices.
450 North position themselves at the top with the flavors of of sweet, tart and black cherries along with vanilla cream as Master Cherries is densely packed with cherry puree that clings to the glass and drifts across the nose with pitted fruit pulp, juices and a stone fruit perfume. Expectedly sweet, the underpinnings of cereal, jam, fructose and jam is the stuff of throat lozenges.
But the true master of the game is the fruit. The variety of cherries, cider, winey spritzer and rounded with the acidic zing of vinous fruit are wrapped in a berry-like juiciness with a tangy late taste. A medicinal bitterness comes with light fruit pectins and a hint of hop resins for an offset of sweetness and a balance for the cherries in a tangy, robust, spicy and juicy finish.
Full bodied, smooth, creamy and plush on the palate, the smoothie ale's textures may be hard to drink but its pleasant to taste. A mere can shared among a flock of soccer moms when Cosco brings out the free samples as this ale successfully beats the tastebuds into submission with relative ease if tackled alone.
