Living up to their name, 450 North dabbles in the combination of fruits to fuel new and exciting smoothie flavors. They are just piled on mounds of cereal and sour ale flavor.
Pouring a ruddy deep red, daringly maroon in color, Slushy XL - Watermelon Cherry immediately swoons the nose with a blanket of fruit and sourness with hints of wine, cider, vanilla and citrus wafting about. As it’s bold sweetness weighs on the early palate, cereal sweetness supports the taste of high fructose, taffy, poundcake and cake batter.
As the emboldened ale washes the middle palate, it does so with a slather of cherries that coat the tongue in true smoothie and slushy fashion. Tasting much more like icee than of beer much of the time, the underpinnings of acidity attempt to balance the fruit and lingering sweetness with a peppery sourness and a clean lactic acid. The juiciness of watermelon round out the session and keep things tasty to the sour end.
Full bodied, juicy and pleasantly cloying, the session finishes sweet and tart with a linger of fruit juices, pulp, skins and glaze in a long and jelly filled finish.
