little cloudy, generous head, aroma a little lemon, faint touch of malt, flavour lemon, pineapple, malt and restrained hops, touch of sweetness. A little lacking in bite for me but still an enjoyable ale

The Handwerk is a good beer. It poured a clear golden color with white head that is leaving some lace. The scent carries some bitter hop with mild malt sweetness. The taste is evenly balanced and is a good sessionable English style ipa. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall this is a solid offering from &Union.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of March 2014. Picked up a little while back from the York Wine & Beer shop. The label has a sub-title that says All-Day IPA, and describes it as craft-brewed in Bavaria. Let's see how the Germans turn out an IPA....

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A hazy orange-amber hue with medium carbonation. Yields a small head of white foam that lasts for barely a minute before subsiding. Aroma of mildly fruity hops with hints of white grape, subtle citrus and grass/hay, underpinned by earthy yeast, caramel and faint stewed hops. Restrained but pleasant.

Tastes of fruity hops with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of white grape, melon, mild citrus, grass/hay, earthy yeast, caramel malt and stewed hops. Well-attenuated and slightly oily, followed by a spicy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with a light pepperiness from the hops. The hop oils stimulate the tastebuds, though the carbonation is lacklustre. Good body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of fruity aromatic hops, bitterness and earthy yeast.

Pretty good - not an amazing IPA but certainly drinkable (all the more impressive for being a German take on the style). It looks OK, with an aroma/flavour of fruity hops and citrus notes. The yeast adds depth to its character. Mouthfeel is alright, though spritzier carbonation would be nice. If I lived in SA (where this is exported to), I'd be more than happy to revisit it. Worth trying if you stumble across it.
