The fruit shows up early in the nose but needs some coaxing at warmer temperatures to gain its stride. Once emerged, the huckleberry plays a charmed and defining role. It also takes on what is likely a secondary fermentation producing a wine-like character. Im guessing here, but the shrill, tannic bitterness impinging upon the fruity sweetness perhaps derives from the skin of those berries.
I love huckleberries and eagerly toss both varieties in my pancake batter every chance I get as they ripen outside my home in summer. But perhaps huckleberries are better suited to wine than to beer. The tannic element can be a bit cloying.
Coeur dAlene offers this berry beer year round. It is very clear, pale yellow-gold with sluggish carbonation and nice draping lace. It tastes a bit like a wine spritzer or a dilute wine cooler. My pint was interrupted by a half-hour excursion. When I returned the ale had settled in to softer contours and was a touch more flavorful. Drink slowly.

The Huckleberry Ale is bright gold with slight chill haze. There is a white skim of a head.
Lots of berry aroma backed with malts. Perfumy in the best way.
The taste is light & bright with berries. There is a bit of sweet malts in the background. The berry taste is not overpowering and does not become cloying.
The mouth is crisp but a bit thin.
Drinkablity is a tough call. Would I have it again, yes. Would I have more than one in a night, no. Nice summer type beer.
