The Steam Plant regularly features one ale on tap branded the brewers whim, an offering of any style available on a rotating basis. On my visit the whim was a double IPA brewed to an unknown alcohol content. This could easily have been labeled an imperial red ale or even a Scotch ale. It is deep crimson red, slightly less than clear, with fine sheet lacing. The malts are nutty and toasty, yet also with strong fruited qualities suggestive of a red ale. Bittering is relatively low and the beer tilts more towards the malt than the hop in comparison to the Rockford Bay IPA. Notably cleaner than most Steam Plant beers.
