Invented for the Liége exposition of 1905 to compete with British imports, the Spéciale Belge or Belgian pale ale style marries the complexity of Belgium’s beers to the drinkability of Britain’s pale ales. Dageraad Amber’s light malty sweetness and rich bouquet of malt and stone fruit are balanced by a hoppy aroma and a crisp finish. This beer was inspired by the experience of enjoying a fresh bolleke − Antwerp locals’ affectionate nickname for a glass of De Koninck − in the Dageraadplatz, just a stone’s throw from the De Koninck Brewery.

On tap at the brewery in Burnaby. Pours a murky orange with little head. Nose is orange, wheat, grass, caramel, honey, and coriander. The taste is fantastic. Orange, lemon, wheat, grass, a floral note, and a lot of Belgian yeast.

Hazy red-gold color. Poured a tall head that took a few minutes to collapse to a thick skiff. High flow of mixed sized bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Left small speckles of lacing at the top of the glass leading into a sheet of fine lacing starting half way down.
Smells of sweet malt and some fruit. Heading towards a Christmas pudding smell, but stopping before getting very far. A hint of yeast. Light citrus lime. Very light vegetal hops. Swirling the glass kicked up a medium barnyard that faded after a couple of seconds, leaving the original scents.
Strong flavor of medium roasted malt with both sweet and tart flavors. Very light lime. Mild dried fruit flavor. Medium bitters. There are other fleeting flavors mixed in that are very hard to describe. The bitters build up over time and are quite strong by the bottom of the bottle. The aftertaste starts out with more bitters and then turns towards the fruit and a stronger malt.
Some light tongue tingling. Quickly grew to a coarse foam. Feels like a light alcohol burn, but is probably a side effect of the bitters.
Very bold flavor blend. The yeast sediment boosts the flavors quite a bit. The label says to pour with care to leave the sediment in the bottle. Instead you might try a careful first pour into a large glass followed by a swirl and pour into a small glass for two different flavor versions.

Pours a light amber body (surprise lol) with scattered lacing. Nice spices in the aroma and also in flavor. Crisp body, some nuttiness a bit with hints of caramel and the Belgian yeast is not very heavy.

This is an extremely interesting beer - a new style, from a new to me brewery. I really enjoyed the appearance and yeasty nose. The typical banana and clove flavours weave themselves amongst dark malt. Very interesting - worth another attempt, I think!

Was very impressed with this one, nice slightly roasted malt aroma supported by a spicy and fruity yeast character. Had a firm bitterness that made this such an easy drinking, but flavour-packed beer. This one can hold its ground against some of the classics from Belgium!
