On-draught at Kaapse. 6.50 euro a half pint pour - steeply priced, even by De Molen's standards. Collaboration with De Pelgrim. This is the wild turkey B.A. variant, but the base beer is also called "Mastodont."

A: Khaki-tan head with a nice complexion. ~3-4 minute retention. Body colour is an opaque black.

Sm: Plenty of bourbon barrel character, with some faint vanilla in there too. Charred oak. Chocolate malt. Dark malts. Roasted barley. A blip of coconut.

Suggests a more bitter imperial stout, but a balanced one. I'm not sure how long this spent in barrels, but the wild turkey is immediately evident. Still, more vivid bourbon would be welcome (via still more time in barrels).

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Not as well rounded or balanced as the BF bourbon barrel aged stout collaboration from the same breweries. The bourbon barrel is more interesting - hints of coconut, faint charred oak, a blip of vanilla - but it's also more boozy. The roast overwhelms the coconut and vanilla, giving this Russian imperial stout a harsh edge to it.

Rough, dragging, coarse, and dry on the palate, which quickly becomes fatiguing. Well-carbonated. Anything but comforting on the palate; this is really aggressive. I'd like to see a softer, more creamy mouthfeel, but of course it needs to remain full-bodied to support its intense malt backbone.

More mellow notes are needed to balance out the aggressive roast, acrid coffee-like burnt bitterness, and char. More coconut, more vanilla, maybe actual vanilla bean, even a dab of Lactose sugar. The balance just isn't dialed in.

O: Definitely a sipper. Would make a good armchair beer on a wintry night. It's nice work from the breweries involved, even if it is a bit rough around the edges. Too pricey for me to buy again or recommend to others; I'd happily spring for a De Molen offering instead (it's worth noting at the time of this writing that a Bruichladdich barrel aged imperial stout from De Molen could be had from Kaapse's bottle shop for the exact same price...but with ~32% more beer). This is my second brew from Kaapse and it's promising, but my God they have got to get their prices in check.
